Innovations
CAB’s affiliation with The National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN)
The CTN is an organization funded by NIDA that consists of 16 nodes across the country that develops and implements multi-site research studies to further enhance our understanding and treatment of substance use disorders. Each node consists of a research organization and affiliated community treatment programs that work collaboratively together. This design helps to bridge the gap between research and practice as any study that gets conducted has the buy-in of both the research and provider communities. CAB is affiliated with the Northern New England Node, which has McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School as its research partner. CAB’s affiliation with the CTN enables CAB to be involved in new technologies designed to bring state-of-the-art treatment to its clients.
Other Ongoing Research
CAB is currently involved with researchers from the University of Wisconsin/Madison to investigate the use of ACHESS (Addiction Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System), a new technology designed to help individuals achieve abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. ACHESS is a Smart Phone that will have built into it a range of support services available to participants. This may include: daily check-ins; support services available in participants’ communities; AA, NA, and SMART Recovery meeting locations; daily meditations; strategies for dealing with urges to drink; and useful contacts, to name just some. Participants for this research will be clients being discharged from both our TSS and CAB Transitions programs.
Substance Abuse Prevention Programs
CAB is currently delivering evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs to middle school aged students at two schools on the North Shore: the Manchester Essex Middle School and the North Shore Academy in Beverly. CAB chose a prevention program called Project ALERT as Project ALERT is a well researched substance abuse prevention program that has been shown to be very effective in reducing the likelihood of 8th graders using cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana, and experiencing problems related to drinking. Project ALERT consists of 11 sessions with 3 booster sessions and is listed on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP) as a model program.
Vivitrol
CAB also recently began offering Vivitrol, which is a new medication designed to help people to achieve abstinence from alcohol. Vivitrol is an injectable form of naltrexone, which has been shown to increase rates of abstinence from alcohol. What makes Vivitrol different is that it only needs to be taken once per month, which helps to increase treatment compliance. In conjunction with Vivitrol, counseling is offered, as CAB believes that most individuals need a combination of medication and psychosocial treatment if they are going to resolve their substance use disorder. Anyone interested in receiving Vivitrol or learning more about this medication is encouraged to contact CAB at (978) 777-2121 and ask for Julie at the Vivitrol program.
